Cheruthoni is a small town in Idukki. This town is famous because of the Cheruthoni dam which is a part of the Idukki Reservoir. Cheruthoni is a part of Vazhathoppu panchayath in the Idukki district. The Cheruthoni Dam in Idukki is a 138m high concrete gravity dam. This dam which is built in 1976 is the third-tallest dam in the country. It was built as a part of the Idukki Hydro Power Project. The villages Vaazhathope, Karimban, Tadiyanpadu, Manjapara, Maniyarankudi, Bhumiyamkulam, and Peppara are close to this dam. In case of any emergency, if the water in Idukki Dam needs to be reduced, then the shutters of Cheruthoni are raised to reduced the water level. The Cheruthoni Dam and the surrounding is also a picnic spot.
