The Edappally Mar Geevarghese Sahada church, included in the list of oldest churches in India, was built in AD 594. The Edappally is a commercial hub and a prominent residential area in Ernakulam city in Kerala, India. The Edappaly junction is one of the busiest junctions in the city. This church is a popular pilgrimage center. The main offerings in this church are chicken and eggs. The church which has the history of 14 centuries is renovated in AD 1080, later the facade and altar also renovated. The altar was renovated with sculptures, angels, and vines around the picture of the Virgin Mary. Pope John Paul II laid the foundation stone for the new church in January 2001, and was dedicated to the believers in April 2015. It is built in the Kerala-Europe architectural style. The main chapel covers an area of 19500sqft. The church is 88,000sqft and can accommodate 5000 people at a time. It is the biggest church in India. St. George’s Syro Malabar Forane Church in Edappaly is one of the important Christian religious centers in Kochi. People of all religions visit this church regardless of their caste and creed.
