It was only in the late nineteenth century that Wes dancers were first invited to perform outside the Kangaria Temple at the Kandy Perahera Festival. Kandyan dance, which highlights the culture of Sri Lanka, is now performed in a wide range of costumes. Kandyan dance includes various dance forms of the region known as the County in the Central Hills region of Sri Lanka. But today it is widespread in other parts of the country. Many contemporary dancers in Sri Lanka borrowed the Kandyan form for their work.
