Padayani is a ritual art form performed at Bhadrakali temples located on the banks of river Pampa. Padayani is a Devi temple ritual from Kerala. The word comes from the word Pedani which means military formation. Yes, because it celebrates the victory of Goddess Bhadrakali over the demons that come in various shapes and forms. It is actively practiced in Central Kerala, mostly in the Bhagwati or Bhadrakali temples located on the banks of Pampa River. Padayani they say involves the knowledge of all 64 artforms mentioned in the Shastras. Celebrated to honor harvest, Padayani is a celebration of fertility and happiness. Padayani is performed two districts Pathanamthitta and Alappuzha of Central and Southern Kerala. According to mythology, this ritualistic dance commemorates the dance performed by Lord Shiva and the other Gods to appease Goddess Durga. Popular places where Padayani is performed are Kadammanitta, Kottangal, Othara, Kunnanthaanam and many other temples in south Kerala.
