A blend of history and mythology, a mix of devotion and entertainment, that’s what Murudeshwara is. The temple here is one that consists of the second largest Shiva statue in the world. This figure which is 123 feet in height is made of concrete. The first of its kind is the Kailashnath Mahadev Statue in Nepal.
The temple is situated in Bhatkal Taluk of Uttara Kannada. This colossal statue was built by the Tamil sculptor, Kashinath. The temple is on the Kanduka Hill which is surrounded on 3 sides by the Arabian Sea. The specialty of this temple is the hill jutting out into the sea, the alluring scenery from the top, and the huge statue of Shiva. Legend has it that Ravana worshipped Shiva, and pleased by his devotion, Shiva gave him Atma-Linga. While Ravana was returning to Lanka with the Atma-Linga, Ganapathi appeared before him in the form of a Brahmin in order to trick Ravana and prevent him from taking Atma-Linga with him.
While trying to uproot the Atma-Linga which got settled on the ground, it broke into pieces. One such piece is said to have fallen in Murdeshwar. Whatever be the story, this temple and the adjoining areas belong to a businessman, Rama Nagappa Shetty. The carvings in Bhukailas Cave, a small cave under the rocks beneath the statue, represent this fable. On the grass beds on the sides of the steps to the temple, the Sun God on fire chariot driven by 7 horses has been beautifully etched.
Ganapathi in the disguise of a Brahmin, Ravana, Geetopadesham, all can be seen chiselled around the temple and portray the sculptor’s excellence in the art of sculpting. The museum depicting ancient stories, the images of demi-gods around the sanctum, and the statue of Nandikesha are all in fact attractive. Above all, there is the lovely beach with very less waves, welcoming people of all age groups. Horse ride on the beach, the park near the temple, the wave pool, etc. are sources of entertainment available here. Murudeshwara, with its beach, hill, and statue of Shiva, offers a visual treat. The place is picturesque from whichever corner you view.
In short, Murudeshwara has everything to entertain you for a whole day. Another attraction of Murdeshwar is the entrance to the temple. It has one of the largest entrance towers in the world – Raja Gopura – 20 storied and 259 feet tall. The carvings on it are fascinating. Lift facility is available at the rate of Rs.10 for going up the building, from where we can have a breathtaking view of the temple and the sea. The spectacular sights for tourists, beaches for those who love to have fun, speedboat ride for adventure lovers, park for children, unlike other temples in India, the Murdeshwar Temple of Karnataka frankly satisfies pilgrims, tourists, and photographers alike.
