Chinnar Wildlife Sanctuary is situated near Marayoor, which is a part of Devikulam taluk in Idukki district, Kerala. It is situated at a distance of 18km from Mayaroor, the land of sandal, in State Highway 17. Chinnar is the only rain shadow forest in Kerala. As there is less rainfall, the whole land looks grey. Chinnar is the favorite beauty of adventurers, families, and travelers. Most of the forest is low stature so that you can see wildlife without any interruptions. The east-flowing Pamba River is the main water source in Chinnar. It is rich with Deciduous forests, dry tropical forests, shrubs, shola forests, meadows, and riverine forests. On the way to Chinnar from Marayoor, the beautiful Thoovanam waterfall can be seen in the lush greenish forest area. There are so many trekking paths in Chinnar such as one-hour riverside trekking, Thoovanam trekking, Vashyappara trekking, and all these have night time camps. Chinnar is the home to the endangered Grizzled Gaint Squirrels. There are only about 200 grizzled giant squirrels in the world, in that 90% is in Chinnar. Chinnar is also the home to the precious Indian star tortoise. The tribals belonging to the Mutuwan section are living in Chambakkara tribal colony. You have to see the different landscapes of Chinnar with cactus, shrubs, rock cliffs, exotic species, rare living organisms, and different species of trees, to know about them.
