Vivekananda Rock Memorial
Vivekananda Rock Memorial is a famous tourist monument built in 1970 in memory of Swami Vivekananda. Nestled among the rocks surrounded by the sea, this memorial is a feast for the eyes. The memorial is situated 500 m to the east from Vavathurai in Kanyakumari. Apart from being a popular tourist center, it is also a pilgrimage center as according to the legend, it was on this rock that Goddess Kanyakumari sat in meditation. The site provides the visitors with facility to meditate in the Dhyana Mandapam or meditation hall. The Vivekananda Rock Memorial consists of 2 more mandapams, Vivekananda Mandapam and Shripada Mandapam. The tall statue of Swami Vivekananda is the major attraction of this place. The memorial is one of the greatest endeavors of man in the architectural field in South India. Vivekananda Rock is reached by ferry services from Kanyakumari. Ferry services are made available from 8.00 in the morning to 4.00 in the evening. The monument is open to the public everyday from 7.00 am to 5.00 pm. Entrance fees to Vivekananda Rock Memorial are Rs. 20 per person, Rs. 20 for still camera, and Rs. 50 for video camera. The memorial is a major tourist spot in Kanyakumari.
