Alagar is a village in Madurai District of Tamil Nadu in India. Alagar Kovil is a famous Vishnu temple in this village. This temple is considered to have been built in A.D. 6th century. The architectural style used is that of Dravidian. The temple stands on the top of a beautiful hill. The history and life of the people of Alagar Village revolves around this temple. At the entrance to the temple, we can see the attractive images depicting historic scenes, the images are said to have been made by the Pandya kings. The best time to visit this temple is during the months of April and May when Chithirai Festival is celebrated. Devotees from different parts of the country flock to the temple to get darshan from their god during this time. It is believed that on these days, Lord Alagar leaves for Madurai for taking part in the heavenly marriage of Meenakshi and Sundareswarar. The temple is open from 6.00 in the morning to 12.30 noon and 3.30 pm to 8.00 pm.
