Attappadi is one of the largest among the tribal settlements in Kerala. Mostly, 3 communities of tribal people live here, the Irulas, the Mudugas, and the Kurumbas. Attappadi is a vast mountain valley at the headwaters of River Bhavani below the Nilgiri Hills which is a part of the Western Ghats. Malleswaran Peak is the highest peak of this place and is famous as a place of worship. This peak has the shape of a big Shivalinga. The main festival of the place is the Sivarathri Festival celebrated in Malleswaran Temple. Attappadi Reserve Forest is a protected area in Attappadi Block of Mannarkkad Taluk in Palakkad District in the state of Kerala. There are many reserve forests in India. The Attappadi Reserve Forest is a protected one. Attappadi is bordered by Coimbatore District of Tamil Nadu, Nilgiris, Karimba of Palakkad, Pottassery, Malappuram, and the Silent Valley National Park. The tribal people of Attappadi, a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, had migrated to this place even before the 15th century. The soil fertility makes a lot of agricultural works possible here. The cultivations include paddy, coconut, areca nut, tapioca, banana, ginger, turmeric, vegetables, coffee, cardamom, clove, chamai, sorghum, ragi, red gram, groundnut, sunflower, etc. The crops cultivated in areas with irrigation facilities include sugarcane, cotton, etc. There is a government goat farm also in Attappadi. Around 80% of Attappadi is forest area. The whole region is covered by dense forests. Attappadi is one of the most beautiful places in the district of Palakkad.
