Ooty Botanical Garden is one of the famous sightseeing spots in Ooty. This 55-hectare garden lies on the lower slopes of the Doddabetta peak, close to the city centre. It is maintained by the Tamil Nadu Horticulture Department. Ooty Botanical Garden was established in 1848. Its architect was William Graham McIvor. The garden is home to more than 650 species of flowers and trees. One of the must see attraction of this garden is a fossil tree that is believed to be 20 millions year old. Visitors can see orchids, roses, imported shrubs, exotic plants, thirty kinds of Eucalyptus trees, herbs and bonsai plants. The whole area is categorised into six parts. the Lower Garden, New Garden, Italian Garden, Conservatory, Fountain Terrace and Nurseries. Botany students must visit this garden as it has rare tree species like the cork tree, monkey puzzle tree and the paperbark tree.
