Amaravathi Dam
Amaravathi Dam is situated across River Kaveri, 25 km away from Udumalpet in Coimbatore District of Tamil Nadu. It is in the Indira Gandhi Wildlife Sanctuary in the district of Tirupur in Tamil Nadu. The dam which was originally constructed to serve irrigation and flood-control purposes has now started with generation of electricity as well. Located at the foot of Annamalai, the dam is a beautiful sight. For the tourists who visit the dam, there is a delightful park also. The Amaravathi Reservoir covers an area of 9.31 sq km. This dam is also famous for its crocodile farm and the facility to catch fishes in the reservoir. The Amaravati Sagar Crocodile Farm, just a kilometer away from the dam site, was built in 1976 and is India’s largest crocodile nursery. Boating facilities for sightseers was started in 2011 January. The park as well as the crocodile farm is open every day from 9.00 in the morning to 6.00 in the evening. It is 96 km by road from Coimbatore via Pollachi and Udumalpet to Amaravathynagar. Through advance reservation, 4 people can lodge in the forest rest house near the crocodile farm. One suite costs Rs. 150 for 2 persons for a single day.
