A village means a place which is not very populated and where a community lives in harmony with nature. Normally, villages are permanent with fixed dwelling houses, but there can even be transient villages. Also, the houses in a village are closely situated and do not lie scattered over the landscape. Even though many types of villages exist, the typical villages that we normally speak of are small and consist of 5 to 30 families. In history, houses were built close to each other for 2 purposes – camaraderie and for protection from harm. People used the land around their dwellings for agricultural purposes. The traditional fishing villages were based on artisanal fishing and used to be located near the fishing grounds. In the beginning of the 20th century, M.K. Gandhi declared that the “soul of India lives in its villages.” Depending on the regional religious followers, most of the villages have their own temples, churches, or mosques. Photos related to villages are often colorful and displaying natural beauty. Alangulam is a panchayat in Tirunelveli District of Tamil Nadu and serves as a trading center for the nearby villages.
