The railway bridge at Pamban, Ramanathapuram district was built in 1914. The bridge was built to connect Mandapam and Rameswaram Island in the Gulf of Mannar. The Pamban Railway Bridge is a rare treasure left to us by the British. The bridge has 146 iron pillars set into the sea and is 2,340 meters long. It connects the hall in Ramanathapuram district with Pamban Island. Rameswaram Ramanatha Swamy Temple, considered as a holy place by the Hindus, is located on the island of Pamban. Devotees coming to Rameswaram from all over India can reach Rameswaram only by crossing the sea bridge. It is the second longest sea bridge in India after the 2.3-km Bandra-Worli sea link on Mumbai’s western coast.
