Jananathamangalam [polonnaruwa], which is in the UNESCO World Heritage List, is one of the most ancient countries in Sri Lanka. It was built by Chola King Vijayabahu. It is a city with magnificent palaces, numerous building complexes, parks, and places of worship. It is 140km to Jananathamangalam, from Kandy through Minneriya National Park. It is also known as the second-oldest capital in Sri Lanka. Vijayabahu palace was built in the AD 1153-1186 period. Now, only the high platform and several pillars of the palace exist. Only the ruins of the vast palace can be seen everywhere. On one side, there is a pond with beautiful stone boundaries. Near to that, there is a council Chamber with picture pillars. After this the royal pool is an amazing sight as the water falls through the underground channels from a dragon face. Everything is ruined here, like the Hampi in Karnataka.
