Sri Meenakshi Temple is one of the prominent royal temples of the city. Meenakshi Temple was built in the 12th century during the reign of Chadayavarman Sundara Pandyan. Later renovations were the Aiyaramkal Mandapam, Ashtashakthi Mandapam, Naickermahal and Theppakulam. There are four towers of nine floors on each side of the main street surrounding the temple. These towers are rich in sculptures. The south tower is larger. It is 160 feet high. If you have not seen the Sri Meenakshi Temple at least once, it will be a complete loss. On the banks of the holy river Vaigai, Madurai is a city of temple halls that are a perfect example of architecture, Tamil art and culture.
