Ayanar Ayanar is a savior who comes to the rescue of his devotees on elephants or horses with bows and arrows. Ayanar or Sastha is one of the folk deities not only in this country but in the whole of Tamil Nadu. You can see every Ayanar temple in every village. Horses are mandatory in all these temples. All these temples have huge and colorful horse statues. Although Ayyanar’s name, form and stories vary in different places, Ayyanar is of ancient Dravidian character everywhere. Ayyanar temples can be found in isolated places in almost all Tamil villages. These temples are also known as the Ayanar Horse Temples.
