Alappuzha is a place rich with beautiful canals, backwaters, beaches, lakes, and vast farming areas. It is a famous tourist destination. The place is well known for its coir industries and coir products. The distance from Kochi to Alappuzha is 53 km. It is 129.4 km from Thrissur and 155 km from Thiruvananthapuram. Alappuzha is 28 km away from Changanacherry and 46 km from Kottayam. The place is connected by water transport to other parts of Kerala, including the tourist paradise, Kumarakom. The whole district of Alappuzha is a tourist center and that may be the reason why Lord Curzon described Alappuzha as the “Venice of the East.” Alappuzha is one of the 14 districts of the state of Kerala in India. The Backwaters of Alappuzha is a major tourist attraction of Kerala and an important tourist spot in India. The main sources of revenue of this place are tourism; toddy tapping; fishing, chiefly for cooking small fish fries; coir manufacture; prawn farming; and paddy cultivation. The Nehru Trophy Boat Race, a historic event conducted annually in Alappuzha, has gained for this place a prominent position in backwater tourism.
