Andaman and Nicobar island is an unforgettable place of Independent India. Cellular jail or Kalapani, which is used by the British to exile and held the political prisoners is situated on this island. This was built in 1896-1906 period. The bricks used to build this jail is from Burma. This building is in the shape of a chariot wheel. In the center, there is a tower and from that tower there are seven building wings along the sides. Each building has three floors with 696 cells and a dormitory. British used the island as jail after the Sepoy Mutiny. This island was chosen to hold inmates in solitary confinement. Thousands of Indians were put in this jail during the war of independence. Today, the cellular jail is the memorial of all the struggles taken by freedom fighters and is a landmark in the Indian history. This is now maintained by the Indian Government. This is a memorial that shows the life in jail of freedom fighters. This is situated in Port Blair, the capital of Andaman and Nicobar. This has light and sound shows every Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday. Hindi Showtime is 6 pm and the English show is at 7.15 pm. The ticket cost for the show is 50 rupees and to visit the jail is 20 rupees. The cellular jail will be closed on every Monday and all national holidays. Visiting time is from 9 am to 12.30 pm and from 1.30 pm to 5 pm. The camera fee is 200 rupees. It is better to add a guide to understand Indian history better.
