One of the prominent Shaivite temples of India, Etumanur Mahadeva Temple is a temple that attracts a lot of pilgrims. The darshan of Ezharaponnana in the temple is admirable for the devotees. One of the elegant sights associated with the temple festivals of Kerala is the Ezhara Ponnana procession held during the annual festival at Ettumanoor Sree Mahadeva Temple.The statuettes are made of jackfruit tree and covered with nearly 13 kg of gold plates. Legend has it that EzharaPonnana represent Ashtadik Gajas. The Gajas for Ashtadi are Airavatam, Pundikaram, Kaumudam, Anjana, Puspadantham, Supradikam, Sarvabhaumaman and Vamana. In this, Vamana became smaller and became Araponna. Celebrated in the Malayalam month of Kumbham, it is on the night of the eighth-day devotees can witness the procession of these golden elephants. The arattu ceremony is held on the tenth day on Thiruvathira asterism.Caparisoned elephants and traditional temple orchestra are also part of the procession.
